Veracity Consulting’s Vice President of Technology, Amy Krohn delivers the following recap of the cybersecurity happenings for the end of November through early December 2017 time period.

New .NET-Based Ransomware Uses Open Source Code

Two newly discovered .NET-based ransomware families are using open source repositories to encrypt files.two ransomware families have been seen in live attacks carried out via spam emails containing malicious URLs. Both of the new malware families are compiled in Microsoft Intermediate Language (MSIL) and have been packed with the ‘Confuser’ packer.   The malware creates a run key that ensures it is executed each time the user logs into the computer. If removable drives are detected, the threat drops a copy of itself on them, with the name “fatura-vencida.pdf.scr.”   The ransomware changes the victim’s desktop background using image files downloaded from “i[.]imgur.com/NpKQ3KZ.jpg.“Be on the lookout for this one!

macOS Malware Spread By Looking like Symantec Blog

A new variant of the macOS-targeting malware is spreading through a blog that looks like the legitimate security company Symantec. The blog,  symantecblog[dot]com, is a very good imitation of the real Symantec blog, and even has the same content from the original.  If you aren’t sure then don’t download from the site.

Symantec Patches Vulnerability in Management Console

Symantec has released an update to address a directory traversal vulnerability in the Symantec Management Console.  Talk to your security administrators about getting this updated if your company uses Symantec.

Microsoft Manually Patched Office Component

Microsoft engineers appear to have manually patched a 17 year-old vulnerability in Office, instead of altering the source code of the vulnerable component, ACROS Security researchers say.  The vulnerability was addressed with a fixed release on November 14 as part of Microsoft’s “Patch Tuesday” security updates.  If you haven’t done this update, do it now.

With So Many Disasters.. Make Your Donation Count!

First, hurricane Harvey. Then Irma and Maria. Somewhere in there was hurricane Jose. We have floods, earthquakes and California is burning.  Seems like the world is falling apart and that can make everyone feel helpless. In one month, our continent was hammered by five natural disasters. Millions are without power and drinkable water.  There is so much need, sometimes it’s easier to say ” it’s all too much.” Afterall, how do you know that your donations are actually getting there? How can you decide on what and how much? Here are a few tips to help you decipher it all:

Donate with Your Values in Mind

When considering how to give, it’s helpful to start by asking what motivates you.  Animal lovers may want to give to a shelter. Others may want their money directed to certain groups of people, like children, or causes, like clean water.  Remember, it’s your money or time so think with your head while you give your heart.  There is no right or wrong here.

Selecting an Organization to Support

Groups like GuideStar and Charity Navigator can help you choose a legitimate organization.  Wise Giving Alliance and Charity Watch are also helpful.  But some of the best ways to get to know a charity is to ask questions, especially with how much experience it has in disaster relief.  You would be surprised how many organizations have too much overhead for the necessary funds to funnel to where they need to go during a disaster.

Give Cash

It seems impersonal, but money is often the most useful form of donation. Again, think about the time and effort it takes to transport hard goods.  Money is a fast and easy way to get what’s needed to those that need it the most.

Keep Giving if You Can

Large donations come in the right after disasters, but recovery takes a while.  Try doing an automatic monthly donation to the charity and follow up with how they are spending it with the disaster efforts.  A small donation like $10 dollars a month can add up for a charity.

Still confused? Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

July 2017 Security Update with Amy Krohn

Veracity Consulting’s Vice President of Technology, Amy Krohn delivers the following recap of the cybersecurity happenings for the end of June through early July 2017 time period.

Template Injection Used in Attacks on U.S. Critical Infrastructure: The recent attacks aimed at energy facilities and other critical infrastructure organizations in the United States have leveraged a technique called template injection, according to Ciscoís Talos intelligence and research group. The U.S. Department of Energy said it was working with affected firms and pointed out that only administrative and business networks appeared to be impacted, not systems controlling the energy infrastructure.

Dok’ Mac Malware Used to Target Swiss Banks:A variant of the Dok malware for Mac targets Swiss banking users in attacks that appear to be part of Operation Emmenta.

PoS Malware Hits Avanti Payment Kiosks:Cybercriminals used PoSeidon PoS malware to steal payment card and biometric data from Avanti kiosks.

Flaws Found in Dell EMC Data Protection, ESRS Products: Dell EMC provides patches and workarounds for vulnerabilities found in its Data Protection Advisor and ESRS Policy Manager products.

Kaspersky Releases Open Source Digital Forensics Tool: Kaspersky releases source code of Bitscout, a compact and customizable tool designed for remote digital forensics.

Google to Completely Ban WoSign, StartCom Certificates in Chrome 61: websites still using StartCom or WoSign-issued certificates should consider replacing these certificates. Apple and Mozilla have already decided to ban WoSign and StartCom for at least one year. Talk to your System Administrator and web developers about this change.

75 % of U.S. Companies Think GDPR Doesn’t Apply to Them: A new report focusing on Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) preparedness shows a worrying disconnect between Business and Security. GDPR will come into effect in May 2018, and the regulation will require close cooperation between Business, IT and Security to enable and ensure regulatory compliance across the whole organization. The penalty for failure is severe: up to €20 million or 4% of global turnover.  To comply with disclosure requirements, companies need to have a detailed and thorough incident response plan in place; and for this to be effective, all aspects of the business (not just IT and Security) need to know exactly what must be done.  If you don’t have one talk to your IT teams about it. If you need a security assessment, contact the Veracity team and we will get you started.
